BEEN DEALING SWEETNESSJuliet, leaning over the mouth of Koi's tank, runs the pad of a finger down his head and back. Then, face sternly neutral, she turns to retrieve the salad she'd left on her grandmother's desk.
Pinching the edge of the small bowl between fingers, Juliet returns to the tank, lowering the salad into the top right corner.

At her desk, Phillipa signs another document, folds it neatly with a flick of her finger. Besides her, Juliet looks over Koi.
Things have been quiet.
Phillipa sits straight, finishes another line of the next parchment before looking up. The two look most dissimilar when unsmiling.
“How are your classes, my dear?” She asks. In her drawer sits Juliet’s dropped classes in an envelope.

SHUT UP KISS ME
Juliet glimpses her grandmother over her shoulder, gaze not quite cool; refreezing.
Once the leaf is gone, she pulls another from the bowl and runs her thumb over the edges.
Koi bites it suddenly. Juliet jumps, letting go of the leaf, and he nearly swallows it whole.

thunder whisper low
Phillipa feels the chill settle like a frosted cape over her shoulders as Juliet’s gaze slides over her.
Her eyes returns to the document at hand, and the quill flutters as she signs her name.
On the last curve, the ink blots, and Phillipa says without pause: “I know you’re upset with me.”

The lump in Juliet's throat swells, but she swallows it, knuckles of a curled fist buoyed in her stomach.
"If she was better qualified," Juliet says evenly, "please just—tell me?"
A finger unfurls, nail digging into intestine, another into lung. Tears from the sting well.

thunder whisper low
“No — no, my dear.” Phillipa finally rises from her chair: cloth, weight, things drag at her shoulder, but she steps from behind her desk.
“Juliet, it was — so difficult,” Phillipa murmurs, approaching, her arms unfurl, hoping to hold. “This decision, it was not a judgement of your qualifications, or your character”
